The ropeway connects Shishi-iwa Station and Momijidani Station (Momijidani Park) on Yayama, a 535-meter-high mountain in the center of Miyajima (Itsukushima) where Itsukushima Shrine is located.
The Miyajima Ropeway connects two different types of ropeways: a circular type (from Momijidani Station to Kaya-dani Station) and an alternating type (from Kaya-dani Station to Shishi-iwa Station), both of which are rare in Japan.
It takes about 30 minutes on foot from Shishi-iwa Station to the summit. While climbing, you may encounter deer (Miyajima deer).
A free shuttle bus runs from the entrance of Momijidani Park to Momijidani Station.
Momijidani Line (section from Momijidani Station to Kaya-dani Station)
Distance is about 1.1 km, 10 minutes ride.
Shishiiwa Line (from Kayadani Station to Shishiiwa Station)
Distance is about 0.5 km, and boarding time is 3 minutes and 30 seconds.
Opened on April 1, 1959. It connects Momijidani Station (Momijidani Park) in Miyajima and Shishiiwa Station in Yayama. Kayatani Station (Kayatani Station) is located on the way, but it is not possible to get off at this station.
Mt.
At the top of the mountain, there is an observatory called “Miyajima Yayama Observation Rest Area”. Hirobumi Ito, the first Prime Minister of Japan, praised the view from the summit as “one of the three most beautiful views in Japan.
On the northern slope of the mountain, there is the “Choriyama Primeval Forest,” which has been designated a national natural monument. It is home to a unique distribution of plants and vegetation, including the warm-temperate coniferous fir and the southern alpine plant, the water hyacinth, and a colony of cornflowers.
The mountain has been an object of worship since ancient times, and in 806, Kukai (Kobo Daishi) is said to have founded Mt.
The mountain has long been visited by worshippers as a mountain of faith, with Gozan Shrine, the inner shrine of Itsukushima Shrine, located near the summit, Daishyoin’s numerous halls from the summit to the foot of the mountain, and Itsukushima Shrine located at the foot of the mountain.
