Teishakukyo Gorge

A gorge eroded from the limestone plateau. It is one of the 100 most scenic spots in Japan. Together with Sandankyo, it is known as one of Hiroshima Prefecture’s representative scenic spots and one of the most famous gorges in Japan.

A sightseeing boat operates on Lake Shinryu and takes passengers to the Teishakagawa Dam area. There is also a promenade called “Sansho Hodo” (exploration trail) where visitors can enjoy the scenery while crossing several bridges.

Centering on the Yorikura Iwanin Ruins, artifacts from the Jomon to Kamakura periods have been excavated and are on display at the History and Folklore Museum on the shore of Lake Shinryu.

There are also a variety of lodging and sightseeing facilities, including a sightseeing hotel and a vacation village.

Lake Shinryu is a famous spot for viewing the fresh green leaves in spring and the autumn leaves in fall. Waterfowls fly in and out of the lake, giving it an appearance that is hard to believe that it is a man-made lake.

The karst topography formed by deep erosion of the limestone plateau extends to a depth of 200 to 300 meters. In particular, the natural bridge “Yu Gyo (male bridge),” formed by the erosion of limestone, is the biggest highlight of the canyon. Other limestone caves, such as Baiyundong, can also be seen.
